Our long wait for the Syrian refugee family we are sponsoring is coming to an end, and quickly! On January 14, we finally heard from Immigration and Refugee Canada and the United Church of Canada that the family had passed their medical and security checks and been granted permanent resident status. We were told we would have to wait 4-10 more weeks for their arrival, but on January 21 we were given notice that they will arrive in Ottawa on February 7! The Coordinating Committee began gearing up after Christmas in the expectation of their arrival “sometime” this spring or summer, but now we are in “full speed ahead” mode. Fortunately, the money has been raised and has been earning interest, we have a house for them to live in, and many of the items we need to furnish the home. We have a team of volunteers who will help them in many ways, from learning English to applying for health cards and the many other things they will need to do to begin their new life in Canada. We are holding a community meeting to update everyone and to see who is still available to help. The meeting will be Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at Trinity St. Andrew’s United Church, 291 Plaunt St. S., Renfrew.
